Tawan adalah salah satu resto cina dengan bubur sebagai bintang utamanya. Setahu saya, dari ngilmu di acara2 TV seperti TLC dan AFC, ada dua kategori bubur cina, yang dimasak ala canton dan ala tio ciu. Tawan ini sepertinya menggunakan resep bubur Cantonese, sedangkan prime example untuk bubur Tio Ciu / Teo Chew adalah Happy Garden Chinese Restaurant.


Tawan is one of the Chinese restaurant that caters to congee lovers, which also serves some great tasting chinese food. From what I know, watching those cooking channel such as AFC and TLC, there is two type of Chinese Congee, one is the Cantonese Congee / Porridge and the other is Teo Chew. Tawan Restaurant started business in 1996 in Megamal Pluit. Time of financial crisis, many restaurant managers who fall out, but Tawan survive. Every new branch is never empty of visitors. the menu are competitively priced with many selections to choose from. Interestingly, until now the owner of the restaurant have no intention to franchise it, despite the many request from potential investors.

Berikut beda antara bubur Canton dan Tio Chiu  :
  • Bubur Kanton dimasak hingga sangat lembut, sebelum dimasak bulir beras direndam semalaman di air supaya lebih gampang terurai. Bubur Tio Chiu dimasak lebih cepat dan tidak selembut bubur Kanton.
  • Bubur Kanton dimasak dengan menggunakan kaldu, sedangkan Tio Chiu tidak.
  • Bubur Kanton lauk pendampingnya langsung masuk di dalam bubur, dan kebanyakan berisi daging, ditemani cakwe. Kalau bubur Tio Chiu lauknya ditaruh di piring-piring kecil, selain daging juga sering disertai sayur dan asinan.


Some key difference between Congee cooked Cantonese compared to Teo Chew style :
  • Cantonese Porridge are considerably smoother, the rice are soaked overnight before cooking, so they break apart easily during boiling. Teo Chew porridge are more cooked faster, the rice still maintain it's shape and texture.
  • Cantonese Congee are cooked with stock, Teo Chew with seasoning and water
  • On the Cantonese congee/porridge the side dishes are included in the porridge and it's usually quite heavy on protein. While the Teo Chew porridge side dishes are usually put on small plates, aside from meat, it's usually enjoyed with cooked vegetables and pickled veggies.

Rasa masakan di sini lumayan enak, beda dengan sebagian resto yang banyak memakai minyak dan kadang terasa berat, ciri khas Ta Wan adalah rasanya cukup ringan tapi tidak hambar.

The food here is lighter than the usual cooking method of Chinese restaurant around the city.You can enjoy the dishes without feeling too heavy on the end of the meal.
