Mie Ujung Pandang HD Kertoarjo - Surabaya

Ujung Pandang's Wonton Noodle in Surabaya

Back in the year 2000 ish, Ujung Pandang wonton noodle is one of the most popular street food, with lots of vendor opening shops along the street of Kertajaya, Dharmahusada and all the way to Mulyosari street.
Nowadays there aren't many street food vendor, much have been relocated. The one still around is this Mie HD and another street stall in Klampis street.
This is a non halal / kosher meal, since it uses grilled pork.

Sanpachi (38) Ramen - Surabaya

Sanpachi Ramen / Ramen 38 - Surabaya Town Square (SUTOS)

Ramen 38 is one of the Ramen which said to have authentic japanese taste, which is similar to Ikkousha Ramen in western Surabaya. Since it's been a while since I went to Japan (1996) I don't really know for sure how authenthic Ramen should really taste.

Those days, Sukiyaki, Shabu-shabu and Yakiniku was all the craze in Surabaya / Indonesian foodies, people would cringe at the thought of eating raw fish like Sashimi and Sushi which is currently the trending Japanese food here, along with Ramen.

Kopi O - Ciputra World

My Kopi O - Surabaya

Playing Card game @ My Kopi O

This Cafe is one of the favorite for my female friends. Everytime going to CW, they kept asking to go here. There are many choices alike, which combine Cafe with Malaysian / Singapore dishes.

The reason I don't really like the place is because I'm a coffee addict.. a vice I must admit that at times ruin a whole experience. The coffee here isn't up par with the ones in Coffee Bean, Excelso or Starbucks. I don't really know if it's due to the mixture, coffee brewing method or bean choice, but the coffees seems a bit weak and the milk have those condensed milk taste, which I like in some breads or desserts but not for coffee that aren't made with vietnam drip.
A bit odd for the place, since they have a decent selections of coffee bean, that you can buy fresh from the counter. I like their Papua and Sumatra beans, which has a good aroma and body.

The place is usually packed, though I might not fancy it, but it seems they struck the right cord with most of their clientele. For my taste, I prefer Excelso and the gang. If I have to go there again, I think I'll stay away from the coffee and just order the blended drinks or Ice Tea Tarik.
There are usually some credit card promotion for this place, with discounts ranging from 20-50%.

Eclectic Bar & Pub - Surabaya

Eclectic Bar & Pub - Surabaya Town Square (Sutos)

After having dinner in Kambodja Sutos, we stroll aroudn Sutos Mall to find a place to hangout and have a drink. Because two of my friend want to try the bar scene, so we head to Eclectic Bar & Pub.

Since we wanted to chat, we pick a table outside of the bar, since they were playing some loud hip hop music inside, it wont be suitable for chatting.

Erdinger Beer Rp 150.000

One of my friend tried the Erdinger beer which costs quite a bit more than the regular beer. He said it has smoother taste, also a hint of something, I can't remember what he said, either some nuts or fruits. I'm not a beer or wine connoisseur hence can't really tell what's the difference between one and the other. I only ordered a San Miguel light since I want to limit my calorie intake. Bir Bintang and San Miguel costs about Rp 40.000 which is less than a third of the Erdinger.

Here's a link of the beer's website, apparently they have a fun club too
http://www.erdinger.de/en/erdinger-weissbier-fan-club.html

Bir Bintang @ Eclectic Pub & Bar Surabaya

Taken with Sigma 50mm F1.4

The setting and ambiance is quite nice, but I'm not really experienced on picking a bar or such place, and my favorite drink is coffee, so I can't really comment on the drink selections there. What I know is that they have quite a big selection on imported beers, along with beer tower and flavoured beer which I've only tried a couple of time at Kirkos

Kambodja - Sutos, Surabaya

The Kambodja by Frangipani

The Kamboja - Sutos

Kambodja is one of the new restaurant that opened in 2012. It's quite popular because their price is quite affordable for mall standards and the portion are big. For lunch they have a discount of 50% for limited menu, and there's a 20% discount for dinner.

Kambodja Frangipani - Tahu Tek - Rp 24.000

Kambodja Frangipani - Tahu Tek Special - Rp 27.000

Their Tahu Tek comes in two choice, regular and special. The difference is only on the deep fried clear glass noodle which is sprinkled on top. Both are equally not good, to oily and lacking in taste, but if I must choose, I'd say go with the regular one. It's not on par with the food stall variation, such as Tahu Tek pak Jayen, or even pak Gendut, which isn't as good as Jayen's. Their place is really messy and much less comfortable, since it's street food vendor style, but it's much more delicious and just costs Rp 10.000 in comparison with the Kambodja's Rp 24.000 dish.

Kamboja - Sate Ayam / Chicken Satay - Rp 25.000
The Kambodja - Sate
Kambodja Frangipani - Nasi Langgi - Rp 31.000
The Kamboja - Sutos
Kulit ayam goreng, yuck..

The Nasi Langgi tasted ok, though again, nothing special about it. I don't think I'll be going back, since nothing really memorable, and there are other better choices in the mall. Though far from the abismal quality of Sushi Hana Sutos, it's taste and quality of cooking are subpar in comparison with other mall tenant, therefor this place is more suitable for a quick lunch and not a culinary destination.

Depot Gudeg Bu Har - Surabaya

Depot Gudeg Bu Har & Mie Kluntung Pak Yanto

Depot Gudeg Bu Har - Surabaya

Prof Dr Moestopo street is quite famous for it's Indonesian food, one of them is Gudeg Bu Har, which is in the same street with some of the other famous madams of Indonesian Restaurants, the duo of Shrimp Rice proprietor Bu Rudy & Bu Indra and also Bu Cokro.
This place is Gudeg Bu Har, which provide a Surabaya take on Gudeg, which is usually a Jogjakarta staple, which is famous for it's rather sweet taste, and that's the way Gudeg usually is. But this particular dish is not as sweet as it's Jogjakarta counterpart.

in case you're wondering what's Gudeg, here's a short explanation :

Ambrosia Dine & Lounge - Surabaya

Ambrosia - Dian Istana, Surabaya

Ambrosia - Surabaya

One one fine afternoon, few months ago, it was the beginning of monsoon season which means the end of the super hot summer, we decided to go to the edge of west Surabaya to find a dining place which serve good steak.
The first choice was Meat Shop in HR. Muhamad, but on the way, we got tempted by the giant billboard of Ambrosia, promoting their Steak, US Beef buy 1 get 1. So we diverted our plan and check it out.

Ambrosia

The place is quite cozy, suitable for hanging out, meeting for work or for a date. The cost per person is about Rp 80.000 minimum, which is more of the upper middle class segment for Surabaya, so this place is more suitable for special occasion rather than a weekly visit or such.

Indigo Restaurant - Majapahit Hotel, Surabaya

Indigo - Hotel Majapahit Surabaya

Open Kitchen @ Indigo Restaurant

Indigo is the restaurant in the famous Majapahit Hotel in Tunjungan street, Surabaya. This hotel is quite famous in Surabaya (and dutch?) history as the location of the "Battle of Surabaya"
Here are a few description of the hotel and historical event, taken from Wikipedia :

The Hotel Majapahit is a historic luxury hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia. Located at 65 Jalan Tunjungan, Surabaya. The hotel was founded in 1910 as Hotel Oranje by Lucas Martin Sarkies who commissioned Regent Alfred John Bidwell to design the hotel. The hotel opened on 1 July 1911.
A new art deco style lobby extension was opened in 1936. The opening was celebrated with a royal party attended by Crown Prince Leopold III from Belgium, Princess Astrid from Sweden and Charlie Chapman.
During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia the hotel name was changed to Yamato Hotel and initially was used as a temporary prison camp for Dutch women and children. The hotel was the site of the famous "Insiden Hotel Yamato" (in English "Hotel Yamato incident") on 19 September 1945 in which young Indonesian revolutionaries tore the blue part of the Dutch flag flown in the hotel to change it to the red and white Indonesian flag in the lead up to the Battle of Surabaya. Following this incident it became known as the Hotel Merdeka, or the Liberty Hotel.
In 1946 the Sarkies brothers returned to manage the hotel and changed the name to the Lucas Martin Sarkies Hotel. In 1969 Mantrust Holdings Co., became the new owner and named the hotel after the historic kingdom of Majapahit. It was operated by the Mandarin Oriental group between 1993 and 2006. The hotel was acquired by PT. Sekman Wisata in 2006.

Kartiko Pasar Atum - Jajan Pasar Surabaya

Kartiko is a traditional Indonesian snack seller. Snack in this case include some heavy ones with rice as base ingredient. This store is located in Pasar Atum mall, a heaven for some woman, though parking is hell and facilities are poor. What attracts them is the many variations of boutiques, selling fashion items from lower to upper middle class clientele.

This kind of store usually just emphasize on the food taste, but not for Kartiko, they also put as much attention on their store design.

XO Suki - Surabaya

XO Suki - Galaxy Mall, Surabaya

XO Suki - Dining Area

In the past few years back, there was a craze of Suki dishes, with so many similarly themed restaurants opening up. From a sizable bunch of more than 5 eateries, only two remains, one is the Golden Rama in Gubeng street, the other is the XO Suki, which have many branches in the popular malls.

The term Suki itself,
XO Suki - Tofu, Angry Bird style
most likely is derived from Thai Suki, which is a hot pot dish in Thailand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_suki
Thai suki, known simply as suki (สุกี้) in Thailand, is a Thai variant of hot pot, a communal dish where diners dip meat, seafood, noodles, dumplings and vegetables into a pot of broth cooking at the table and dip it into a spicy "sukiyaki sauce" before eating. Despite the name, the dish only barely resembles Japanese sukiyaki, having more in common with shabu shabu and Chinese hot pot.
Thai sukiyaki evolved from Chinese hot pot served in restaurants catering to members of Thailand's sizeable ethnic Chinese clientele, in which an aluminum pot was heated on a charcoal fire at the table and the raw ingredients presented on one big plate.
